I just picked up "Life of Pi" again and read the intro (Just finished Water for Elephants - an absolute joy of a read), and again, it requires quoting:

If we, citizens, do not support our artists,
then we sacrifice our imagination on the altar
of crude reality and we end up believing in nothing
and having worthless dreams.
